Denos C. Gazis
Denos C. Gazis, a pioneer in the field of Transportation Science, has
distinguished himself as a researcher, a research manager, and as a leader
in the scientific community. As a researcher he was among the early key
contributors in studies which established the foundations of traffic
science, including traffic flow theory, the optimal control of congested
store-and-forward networks, and the use of computer technology for traffic
management, for example, the real time computer control of traffic in
vehicular tunnels. As a manager, he initiated and led significant
technical work at IBM Research from the early uses of computers to the
current development of Intelligent Transportation Systems. As a leader in
the technical community, he was a founding member of the Transportation
Science Section. As its chairman he led the effort to establish the
Transportation Science Journal and later became its editor. In 1974 he
co-authored and edited the volume Traffic Science which to this day is one
of the best sources in the field. He also spread the gospel of
Transportation Science by organizing short courses at leading universities
and initiating interaction with the engineering community through the
Highway (now Transportation) Research Board. He is a prolific writer, a
distinguished speaker, and one of the leading lights in the Transportation
Science community .
